The Rajapalayam is a rare and majestic Indian sighthound breed, originally bred for hunting and guarding. Native to the town of Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu, India, this breed is known for its loyalty, speed, and bravery. Traditionally used by South Indian royalty for hunting wild boar and as guard dogs, Rajapalayams are now recognized as one of India’s most iconic native dog breeds.

Characteristics of a Rajapalayam

    • Males: 25–30 kg (55–66 lbs), 65–75 cm (25–30 inches)
    • Females: 20–25 kg (44–55 lbs), 60–70 cm (24–28 inches)
  • Lifespan: 9–12 years
  • Coat: Short, smooth, and fine
  • Colors: Typically milky white, but rare variations include fawn, black, and brown
  • Eyes: Golden or light brown; some may have pinkish or blue eyes
  • Ears: Medium-sized, triangular, and drooping
  • Tail: Long, slightly curved, resembling a whiplash

History & Origin

The Rajapalayam Dog was bred by the Nayakar rulers of Tamil Nadu and was primarily used for hunting boar and guarding forts. These dogs even served in the Indian army during wars, showcasing their bravery and loyalty. Today, efforts are being made to preserve this rare Indian breed.
